It was his last carnage after two controversial decades in

Afghanistan

. On August 29, with the Taliban already in the presidential palace in Kabul, the Islamic State (IS-K) having caused a carnage at the airport gates days before and with the US troops completing a chaotic withdrawal from the country, a American drone struck on the outskirts of Kabul. At first Washington claimed to have aborted an IS-K attack by bombing a car bomb. It was not true.

That attack was, in fact, against the vehicle of an aid worker from an American NGO.

It ended up with three adults and seven children.

The youngest was Sumaya, two years old; the eldest Farzad, 12. "Why have you killed our family? Our children? They are so burned that we have not even been able to identify their bodies," their parents complained to the BBC. For the United States, which remained silent since the day of the attack, when it was already known who had died, it

was all a "mistake."

"It was an honest mistake," admitted Inspector Sami Said, lieutenant general of the US Air Force, during a press conference on his internal investigation of the event. After interviewing 29 people related to what happened, it is concluded that

"the investigation did not find any violation of the law, including the Law of War.

The execution errors, combined with the confirmation bias and communication failures, caused unfortunately civilian casualties. "

The military explained that the rules of engagement used to carry out the drone attack were understandable given the "perception of a high degree of threat to US forces," although he acknowledged that

not only was there insufficient communication

between all those involved, but, in addition, those involved had a bias inclined to consider valid threats that, in other circumstances, would have been subjected to greater scrutiny.

Such information was based, first, on a video taken with one of its unmanned spacecraft. It showed a group of men loading some containers in the trunk of a vehicle. What the US experts

interpreted as the preparation of a car bomb was, in reality, the loading of water canisters in Zamairi Ahmadi's car.

Immediately afterwards, the aid worker went home. As he walked down the street from his home, with the children of the family approaching to greet him, they bombed.

"When you go and say 'this is a suspicious person', whatever action you take later, you begin to see it through this lens," said Said during the press conference. The Americans hide behind the psychosis produced by the previous attack by the Islamic State in Khorasan, the local branch of Daesh, which killed

170 Afghans and 13 American soldiers

at the gates of the Kabul international airport. In the following days, Washington warned of new attacks.

Colin Kahl, Deputy Secretary of Defense for Politics, assured in the middle of last month that

the US government has offered compensation

to the families of the dead, "innocent victims without any fault, not affiliated with IS-K or threats to US forces. ". Insufficient, according to Ahmadi's nephew:

"Let them come and apologize to our faces,"

the relative told the France Presse agency in Kabul.

During their 20 years of presence in Afghanistan, US forces have been accused of attacking various weddings and even hospitals.

In October 2015, the Air Force killed 42 people by bombing the trauma unit of a medical center supported by Doctors Without Borders.

However, all attempts - still insufficient - to judge possible war crimes committed in Afghanistan have run up against a lack of interest in focusing on US actions.
