The Swedish Prison and Probation Service has produced an incident investigation into the hostage-taking at Hällbyanstalten outside Eskilstuna on 21 July this year.

The investigation describes in detail how the hostage drama took place and how those involved acted.

Contributed to successful solution

One thing that stands out is how the two prison guards who were taken hostage inside a guard room handled the situation.

"The assessment is that they both acted in a way that strongly contributed to the successful solution of the situation," the investigators write.

They are both praised for showing calm even though they were threatened with stabbing weapons and were also forced to the floor.

They are also praised for eventually starting to talk about everyday things with the hostages and thus dehumanizing themselves.

According to the investigation, this probably made it more difficult for the hostages to injure the two prison guards and the longer the drama dragged on, the better the hostages were treated.

Chose to stay

Especially the female prison guard is praised.

At the end of the drama, when they managed to negotiate that one of the hostages would be released in exchange for a number of pizzas being distributed at the institution, she chose to remain in the violence of the hostages.

Despite the fact that the two hostages themselves wanted her to be released.

According to the investigation, the woman had perceived that she had been treated better than her male colleague.

She had also intercepted conversations between the hostages and other inmates at the institution where they said that they would not harm a woman and that other inmates said that it was "haram" to take a woman hostage.

This is the reason why the woman "roars" and decides that it is she who will stay and the male colleague who will leave, despite protests from the hostages.

Nearly two and a half hours later, she too is released and the hostages are arrested.
