“The northern region is important for NATO partly because the countries (of the region) are members and close partners, but also because the region borders on the Baltic Sea, which in recent years has been subject to growing tensions and rearmament,” RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

He noted the increase in tension in the Baltic.

“We have witnessed a significant rearmament of Russian troops in the Baltic with the deployment of new modern weapons systems,” he said.
