The whole of southern Sweden, including Östergötland and Gotland, is covered by the new assessment.

- We do this to protect poultry from infection.

In the areas where the risk is judged to be extra high, you should, among other things, keep your poultry indoors, says Katharina Gielen, acting.

head of infection control at the Swedish Board of Agriculture in a statement.

Serious outbreak

During the winter of 2021, the most serious outbreak of bird flu in Sweden took place to date.

In Östergötland, five farms with broilers and laying hen herds were affected.

The effort during the period was extensive with large areas where restrictions prevailed.

In recent weeks, outbreaks of bird flu have occurred among domestic birds in several parts of Europe.

Found among wild birds

- At present, we have found bird flu virus on wild birds in the county, but we currently have no outbreak in any domestic herd.

It is important that everyone now follows the instructions and increases their biosafety so that we can hopefully prevent the infection from reaching domestic birds, says Helen Loor, county veterinarian at the County Administrative Board of Östergötland.
