Cleo Smith was camping with her family at a popular campsite north of Carnarvon in the state of Western Australia when she disappeared on October 16.

The mother Ellie Smith discovered that the daughter was away from the tent when she woke up at 06 o'clock.

The fact that the girl's sleeping bag was also gone, as well as the fact that the tent's zipper was too difficult to get up for a small child, made the police suspect that she had been taken away, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

A large search operation was launched, where the police formed an investigation group of 100 people, and the state government, among other things, promised 1 million Australian dollars (6.4 million kronor) for information about where the girl was.

Asked for help

Ellie Smith and the child's stepfather Jake Gliddon asked the public for help on television.

- How can someone get into the tent and take Cleo.

How can someone take a child, a tearful Ellie Smith told 7 News when the daughter was missing for ten days.

She was also forced to deny that they themselves were behind the disappearance.

- Never in my life.

We love our daughter and we want her to come home.

If you have children, you understand what it is like to be a parent and that me or Jake would never have done anything to harm our daughter, said Ellie Smith.

During the night towards Wednesday, the police broke into what is described as a locked house in Carnarvon, where the girl was alone.

- They found little Cleo in one of the rooms.

One of the policemen picked her up in his arms and asked: "What is your name?".

She replied, "My name is Cleo," Col Blanch told Western Australian police at a news conference.

"No eye dry"

Blanch describes the effort as looking for a needle in a haystack.

- I have seen seasoned detectives cry openly with relief, he says in the radio program 6PR Breakfast and continues:

- I lack words, which is very rare.

This is something we all hoped for in our hearts and it has now happened.

The girl is said to be fine, but the police do not want to say more about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, more than that a person is detained and interrogated.

A clue was discovered during the night, which led to the house.

"Our family is whole again," Ellie Smith wrote in an Instagram post.
