The United Nations said $6 billion from the world's rich could solve the hunger crisis, while Elon Musk said he would sell Tesla shares and donate the proceeds if a condition he announced was met.

Musk was responding to comments by the Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Program David Beasley, who told CNN last week that a $6 billion donation from billionaires like Musk and Bezos could help 42 million people he said were "going to die." If we don't get to them."

Musk is the richest man in the world and recently became the first person in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index to have a net worth of $300 billion.

If WFP can describe on this Twitter thread exactly how $6B will solve world hunger, I will sell Tesla stock right now and do it.

The index currently says that the net worth of the Tesla CEO stands at $311 billion, which means that $6 billion will be 2% of his fortune.

Such a donation would make him outpace the second richest person in the world, Bezos, by at least $100 billion.

Both men's wealth comes largely from shares in the companies they founded.

But Musk defies the claim that the exact amount will solve the hunger crisis, commenting on his Twitter account that if the World Food Program can show which accounts have led to this belief, then he will sell Tesla shares and donate the required amount, and demanded transparency about how the money is spent.

Beasley responded to Musk, tweeting, "I can assure you that we have open source transparency and accountability systems in place. Your team can review and work with us to be absolutely certain of that."

$36 billion in one day – @elonmusk's net worth increase due to a @Tesla / @Hertz deal.

Congratulations, Elon!

1/6 of your one day increase would save 42 million lives that are knocking on famine's door.

Unprecedented crisis.

Unprecedented wealth.

Help!!

He also clarified that the United Nations World Food Program never said that $6 billion would "solve world hunger," a language Musk used on Twitter.

"This is a one-time donation to save 42 million lives during this unprecedented hunger crisis," he wrote.

Beasley was repeating his call to billionaires, asking them to step up the fight against world hunger.

"It's not complicated, I don't ask them to do it every day, or every week, or every year," Beasley said during an appearance on CNN.

He continued, "The 400 largest billionaires in the United States had an increase in their net worth of $1.8 trillion in the last year. All I ask is 36% of the net worth of people who have a lot of money, but God knows we are working to help people who are yesterday The need is now; the world is in trouble."
