Alison Harding lives in the small English community of Shaftesbury.

On a voluntary basis, she manages a collection point and then sends the local plastic waste for recycling.

- I do this completely for free in my own time, because it will help us all in the future, says Alison in Documents from outside: The recycling scam.

- They will melt it all, shred it into small pieces and then make it into new products such as a soap dish or a watering can, she says.

But with the help of fake identities and a hidden camera, the documentary team can reveal that Alison's collected plastic packaging did not end up in a recycling center in the UK at all - but in a cement factory in Bulgaria ready to be incinerated.

Responsible company: A one-time event

The recycling company responsible for Alison's collected plastic packaging believes that a human error by a subcontractor caused the plastic to end up in Bulgaria.

According to the company, the material will be shipped back to the UK where it will be recycled according to the original plan.
