The World Government Summit Foundation launched a new report entitled “Integrating Security Solutions into Smart Cities Design… How to Build a Safe Smart City in a Volatile Cyber World”, as part of its series of knowledge reports to support governments in anticipating the future of cities and enhancing their security by developing and innovating new solutions.

The report, which was launched in partnership with the global consulting firm Ernst & Young, in conjunction with the International Day of Cities, which falls on October 31 of each year, indicated that cities will witness radical changes by 2050, by increasing their population by up to 70%. He pointed out that 95% of urban expansion will occur in developing countries, which necessitates keeping pace with these great changes through the design of cities, so that they can embrace large numbers of residents in the future.

The report focused on the main challenges facing smart cities, including: insecure devices, linking vision to strategy and policies, simultaneous implementation of multiple programs, large attack space, insufficient funding, absence of a unified security structure, and security controls for operational technology infrastructure, in addition to Publishing revolutionary technologies.

The Deputy Director of the World Government Summit Foundation, Muhammad Yousef Al-Sharhan, stressed that the summit constitutes a platform that shapes the features of the future by finding new solutions to challenges, and represents a center for exchanging knowledge, bringing together policy makers, experts, entrepreneurs, innovators and researchers, in order to ensure the enhancement of the benefit of innovation and technology in the pursuit of development. sustainable.

He said that the report, which was launched in partnership with Ernst & Young, highlights the most important cyber challenges facing smart cities, and the need to enhance government knowledge, thus contributing to the development of cities in which about 4.2 billion people live today, and to develop solutions and initiatives to design advanced and capable cities. To provide full services, enhance cybersecurity to protect the population, and accommodate the expected population increase in the coming years.

He added that the launch of the report in conjunction with the World Cities Day, which was approved by the United Nations General Assembly, and falls on October 31 of each year, confirms the role of the World Government Summit in supporting international efforts to implement the sustainable development goals, specifically Goal 11 on cities as strengths for economic growth, as It contributes about 60% of the global GDP. For his part, Samer Omar, Head of Cyber Security Consulting Services for the Public and Government Sectors in the Middle East at Ernst & Young, said: “Middle East and North African governments have shown great insight when seeking to promote digital transformation that prioritizes individuals and their quality of life. The rapid urbanization movement has strained the physical and digital infrastructure of different countries, so smart cities must focus on three basic elements in their digital programs: people, processes, and technology.

He added that the steady increase in communication and the application of emerging technologies, the application of which was accelerated by the emerging corona virus, showed the existence of new challenges, which necessitates governments and executives to think well about their strategy and current electronic system, and the risks it entails, to be able to understand the challenges, and determine their role in Building a secure online environment for their communities, partners and governments.

The report addressed the most important factors in building smart cities, which require taking measures to ensure the technical development of cities and protect them from the challenges that accompany their development and increase in population rates, and the importance of modern technology that forms a link between different sectors, systems and devices, thus contributing to enhancing the cybersecurity of the population, and supporting new practices Through which governments can keep pace with the era of rapid digital transformation.

main axes

The report, “Integrating Security Solutions into the Design of Smart Cities… How to Build a Safe Smart City in a Volatile Cyber World,” focused on several main axes, to enhance the use of innovation and technology in developing the future of cities, namely: smart city design, cybersecurity trends, and security solutions. The most important axes that governments should take into account when adopting the methodology of integrating security solutions into the design of smart cities, the role of governments in developing, preparing and maintaining cybersecurity policies, and the need for a secure digital infrastructure.
