On October 26, local time, German President Steinmeier announced the end of his term at the government's retirement ceremony and officially handed it over to Merkel, who has served as German Chancellor for 16 years.

It is reported that Steinmeier has asked Merkel to continue to exercise the duties of prime minister until the next prime minister is appointed.

  According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in Germany, Merkel said that most importantly, she did not have the opportunity to travel and study quietly.

  Merkel told reporters: "I found that as a prime minister, I have a lot of things missing. Maybe it's traveling, reading, or just doing something in my free time, knowing that nothing will decide my future within 20 minutes. It happened. This is what I expected."
