The US ambassador to Russia, John Sullivan, described the Russian activity in Libya in support of retired Libyan Major General Khalifa Haftar as malicious.

Sullivan talked about Russia giving Haftar MiG-29s, warplanes that recently participated in military maneuvers for Haftar's battalions led by his son Khaled, in a coastal area west of Benghazi.

Haftar has strong relations with Russia, and forces from the Russian Wagner mercenaries participated in his war on Tripoli before the signing of the recent reconciliation agreement between the Libyan parties.

Russia and its ally Haftar's forces denied previous statements by the US military that Moscow had sent combat planes to support the "Wagner" group there.

And last year 2020;

The US Department of Defense (Pentagon) said that "Russia continues to supply the Libyan rebels with a wide range of weapons, including combat aircraft, air defense missiles, land mines, and armored cars, through the Wagner Group of Moscow-backed mercenaries."

The Pentagon published satellite images that it said showed military equipment delivered by the Wagner Group to the "front lines" of the Libyan conflict in Sirte.
