American schools ban costumes from the series "The Squid Game" on "Halloween" for fear of violence

Elementary schools in New York state have banned students from wearing Squid Game costumes during Halloween celebrations.

The South Korean thriller has been receiving record viewers, and has attracted a large audience around the world thanks to a number of elements including childish games and elaborate production.

School administrators fear that violence will spread among students.

The Netflix platform presents the series Squid Game, which deals with the story of people burdened with debt who covet a large cash prize by participating in a deadly race, albeit primarily for children's games.

Because of the gory content in Squid Game, school administrators had to send e-mails to parents alerting them to the series' violent messages.

Officials at three New York schools said it would not be "appropriate" to wear Squid Game costumes in schools.

In addition to Halloween costumes, the three schools prohibited students from bringing any items that "consider weapons" or "scary".

School officials say that students imitate the series' scenes in the breaks between school lessons.

School principals have warned parents that "games that involve violent behavior will not be allowed in schools."

In the United States, Squid Game has been rated as adult content and "unsuitable for those under the age of seventeen".

But there are parents who have expressed their unease over the schools' decision to ban the wearing of costumes, according to reports.

CBS quoted one of the women as saying, "It's just a disguise. You just have to stop your children from watching the show."

Another woman described the ban as "tyrannical".

In England, teachers are warning that six-year-olds are imitating scenes from the South Korean soap opera.

Earlier this month, officials in the county of Bedfordshire in eastern England warned parents not to allow their children to watch Squid Game, telling them to be careful because children are imitating what they are watching.

The Squid Game is the latest manifestation of South Korea's growing influence on the global cultural scene.

The series achieved the highest views in the history of Netflix, topping the rankings in more than eighty countries.

Squid Game blends social symbolism with extreme violence through a dystopian view of society, portrayed by characters from the most marginalized groups in South Korea.
