The US Secretary of State condemns the Sudanese army's seizure of power

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, in a phone call with Sudanese Foreign Minister Maryam Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi, on Thursday denounced the Sudanese army's seizure of power and the arrest of the country's civilian leaders.

Blinken said on Twitter that he discussed with the Sudanese minister the best ways available to the United States to support the Sudanese people in their demand for a return to democracy.

Thousands of Sudanese have taken to the streets since the army seized power from the transitional government on Monday. Many were killed in clashes with security forces.

Al-Burhan dismissed the Civil-Military Joint Council, which was established to direct the country towards democratic elections following the overthrow of former President Omar al-Bashir in a popular uprising in April 2019.

State Department spokesman Ned Price said that Blinken discussed Washington's support for a civilian transition in accordance with the Sudanese Constitutional Declaration.
