On Thursday evening, Swedish time, the message came: Facebook changes name, to Meta.

According to a source for the technology site The Verge, the name change is probably about the Facebook app, which will keep its name, becoming one of all products under the company - such as Instagram, Whatsapp and Messenger.

"Metaverse" - a virtual world

According to the source, the name change will shift the focus from Facebook only being connected to social media, and give a more multifaceted picture of the company, which now wants to invest in a "new kind of internet".

The idea is that in a 3D environment you should be able to imitate experiences in real life - such as shopping, playing and communicating with others.

"In practice, we will go from people seeing us as a social media company to a metaversum company," CEO Mark Zuckerberg has previously said.

Speculation about the name change

This is not the first time something like this has been done.

Google and Snapchat have previously changed the names of their parent companies to "Alphabet" and "Snap Inc".

The social platform Facebook will thus still have its name.

At the same time, The Verge speculates that the name change is an attempt to clean up the company that ended up in bad weather after internal documents were leaked.

Since then, Facebook has endured criticism for prioritizing growth over young people's mental well-being.
