The

surprise

testimony

of the inmate companion of

Eugenio Delgado

, alleged author of the death of Manuela Chavero in Monesterio (Badajoz) -whose body, buried, was missing for more than four years-, has not disappointed in his statement this Thursday before the judge who instructs the case in court number one of Zafra.

"I am satisfied," summarized the lawyer for the Clara Campoamor association,

Patricia Catalina

-who acts as a popular prosecutor-, who has not been able to delve further into her assessment because the judicial authority itself has prohibited the parties from making any comment on this testimony, which may be very important to determine if the death occurred accidentally, as the accused maintains, after a dispute within his home or if, as believed not only by the family but also by the UCO of the Civil Guard that leads the investigation, acted with premeditation, nocturnal and treachery to kill his neighbor, in addition to sexually assaulting her before ending her life.

This differentiation on the facts is key -once the sentence is produced after the conclusion of the trial- to determine the penalties, since the family lawyer considers that there is enough evidence to demonstrate their intention to murder and later hide the body of Manuela at dawn on July 5, 2016, for which he will ask for a reviewable permanent prison sentence.

For now, in this period of investigation, the testimony of this Thursday may turn the investigation around, very difficult because the autopsy evidence - after so long the body buried in the estate of the alleged murderer - does not seem to lead to a unequivocal conclusion.

He told her "the whole truth"

The prisoner who has testified had previously sent a letter to the court where he said that Eugenio Delgado told him "the whole truth" about what happened.

In his testimony, according to various sources consulted, he has ratified his handwritten version, in addition to abounding in other details to questions from the parties.

The witness arrived at the court in a judicial van from the Badajoz prison, where he is serving a sentence for robbery.

"My name is Antonio and I am going to the Zafra court to resolve the case of Manuela Chavero," wrote this inmate, who assured in the letter that he knew "the whole truth, because the murderer and person responsible for the events told me verbally, without asking him. ".

Thus, he relates: "When I heard how he did it, I got sick and left his side because I have five sisters. I want justice to be done and I do it because it comes from my heart. I volunteer to testify before a judge and in front of the perpetrator, the murderer Eugenio Delgado ".

In parallel, he reaffirmed himself in knowing "the whole truth."

"I am in the Badajoz prison in the same module. I would like the lawyer of the Chavero family to come to visit me and, if possible, Manuela's mother to tell her the facts. The murderer Eugenio Delgado tells me how he ended the life of Manuela and laughing as if what he did was pride. "

"Let justice be done"

In this sense, he stressed that he wanted to "testify in front of him and tell him to his face, that I have no fear. I am here in the Badajoz penitentiary center paying for a robbery, nonsense, from when the heads were not working well. I ask please that this letter reach the prison number 1 of the Zafra court and thus declare. The only thing I ask is to be a protected witness and that justice is finally done with the death of Manuela. Please contact me to finish once and for all. What was Manuela's whereabouts, how she was murdered and how she did what she did once she was dead. "

This Thursday, agents of the Civil Guard's Central Operative Unit who are conducting the investigation and a friend of Manuela Chavero also appeared. It must be remembered that Eugenio Delgado, who was arrested on September 17, 2020, refused to testify before the investigating judge at this point in the process -which has lasted until March-, although he had done so, at least twice, before the Civil Guard and once again when he was brought to justice after his arrest.

Meanwhile, the UCO has not yet completed the investigation and the prosecution itself has requested that a forensic anthropological expert report be added to the investigation, complementary to the autopsy carried out by the Forensic Anatomical Institute of Badajoz and by the National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences in Madrid, which would not have thrown, according to the judge, "clear and rational indications about the cause and action of his death."

This new report has been prepared by

Miguel Botella López

, president of the Spanish Society of Physical Anthropology and professor at the University of Granada.
