North Korean President Kim Jong Un has called on his people to reduce their food intake, asking them to prepare for four lean years in which food is less.

Pyongyang has closed all its borders and stopped all regular imports of goods from China since the beginning of the epidemic in early 2020, causing food shortages in the country.

Last April, authorities warned residents to prepare for an economic situation worse than the "Ardos March", the Korean name for the 1994-1998 famine that killed millions, an estimated 10% of the country's population by some estimates.

Radio Free Asia was able to contact two unidentified sources in North Korea, who said that the situation had reached an "urgent" point.

"Two weeks ago, they informed the neighborhood monitoring unit meeting that the emergency food scarcity in the country will continue until 2025," said a source from the northwestern border city of Sinuigo.

The authorities stressed that attempts to reopen the customs port between North Korea and China before 2025 were very small. “It is clear that the food situation at the moment is already an emergency, and people are suffering from shortages,” the source confirmed.

He adds, “When the authorities tell them that they need to conserve and consume less food until 2025, they can do nothing but feel very desperate.” Reducing the amount of food we eat and tightening our belts more than ever.” Some residents say the situation is now so dangerous that they don't know if they can even survive next winter. Some say that asking them to endure hardship until 2025 means asking them to starve to death.

Another resident of Hyurong, a border city in the north-east of the country with a population of 150,000 people, also claimed that North Koreans are skeptical about Kim Jong-un's record regarding the epidemic.

He said that the meeting claimed that the situation of the Corona virus in other countries was very bad, and that the number of deaths related to the Corona virus was increasing rapidly every day around the world, and this citizen says: “But the population does not trust the interpretation of the authorities, saying that no matter how difficult the situation is. There are no people on the face of the earth who suffer more difficulties than we do.”
