It is a test result from the Swedish Veterinary Institute, SVA, which has given rise to the infection control measures introduced by the Swedish Board of Agriculture.

There are about 7,500 laying hens on the farm in question.

Newcastle disease is serious and contagious to birds, but not to humans.

- This is a serious and contagious disease for birds and is caused by a virus.

For the farm in question, it is very serious, says Ella Sigvardsson, county veterinarian at the County Administrative Board in Örebro.

As the infection has entered the bird population on the farm, there is only one alternative.

- The crew is blocked right now, but will be killed, says Sigvardsson.

Previous outbreaks in other parts of the country

Outbreaks have occurred in other parts of the country over the past ten years, including Östergötland and Västra Götaland, but according to the county veterinarian, she has no idea that it has occurred before in Örebro County.

- At least not for the foreseeable future.

- Both bird flu viruses and viruses that cause Newcastle disease circulate with some regularity in wild birds.

In order to avoid the spread of infection to domestic birds, it is therefore always important to ensure that direct and indirect contacts between domestic birds and wild birds are avoided, says Caroline Bössfall, infection control officer at the Swedish Board of Agriculture in a press release.

Protection zone established

There is a ban on access and special restrictions on the farm in question.

An infection control investigation has been initiated by the Swedish Board of Agriculture.

The authority has also introduced a protection zone with a radius of three kilometers and a monitoring zone with a radius of ten kilometers around the farm.
