Göransson Arena is not just a hall for bandy.

The foundations behind the gift demanded that the arena be for children, the sick and disabled.

In addition, the bandy team in Sandviken occasionally gets married to make room for concerts, fairs and more.

10 million back every year

But despite all the arrangements, Göransson Arena AB is bleeding.

Since the inauguration in 2009, the company owned by municipal Sandvikens Stadshus AB has lost around SEK 10 million every year.

But is it right for taxpayers to pay?

- You could say that all sports activities cost money.

Our culture and leisure sector costs us 130 million a year.

And this year also includes Göransson Arena, says municipal councilor Peter Kärnström (S), who is also chairman of the board of Sandvikens Stadshus AB.

Happy with the gift despite expensive running costs

The eighteen bandy halls built in the country vary greatly in construction costs and Göransson Arena, together with, for example, the facilities in Vänersborg and Lidköping are among the more expensive.

Construction of the arena in Sandviken is estimated to have cost SEK 230 million, compared with the SEK 34 million that the bandy hall in Edsbyn cost to build.

But even if a lavish arena like the one in Sandviken is expensive to operate, the municipal council does not regret receiving the gift.

- We are happy that we got the arena from the Göransson foundations.

I do not think the municipality had built such an arena for so much money, says Peter Kärnström.
