The price of bread could increase in the coming weeks.

It should take five to ten cents on average because of soaring wheat and commodity prices.

Another cause: electricity costs more and more.

Some bakers therefore have no other choice than to increase their prices.

REPORTING

Rising prices do not only affect energy, inflation also affects food.

In Sébastien Bretteau's bakery in Paris, only golden baguettes at 1.25 euros will not increase.

Other specialty breads such as cereal bread, spelled bread, or even wholemeal bread will now cost around ten cents more.

No choice therefore for this baker who sees the cost of his flour increasing.

"The bags of flour have increased by around 10 euros: we went from 50-60 euros to 60-70 per quintal, or four bags of 25 kilos."

The price increase does not delight him: "It's a nice increase, so we are forced to pass it on to customers unfortunately", he laments.

800 to 1,000 euros additional on the electricity bill

Another bill that is soaring: that of electricity.

"Here, it's an oven with eight openings, a monster in terms of electricity", explains Claire, co-manager of the bakery.

800 to 1,000 euros more are expected each quarter according to his estimates.

"1,000 euros per month amounts to saying that we will have more than 12,000 euros of electricity per year, it's huge," she explains.

"When we have 19 people waiting for their salary at the end of the month, we are unfortunately forced to impose a price increase to get by."

Claire and Sébastien only hope for one thing: that this increase will not scare their customers away, while their bakery is barely recovering from the pandemic.
