October 26, 2021 Sudanese Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok and his wife, arrested after the military seized power in a coup, were allowed to return to their home in Khartoum. This is what a military official reported. According to the Qatari TV Al Jazeera, the two have already returned to their home.

The release came after the international community condemned the coup and called on the military to release all government officials who were arrested when General Abdel-Fattah Burhan took power on Monday 25 October.

The official did not specify whether Hamdok and his wife were free to move or make calls, adding that their home in Khartoum's upscale Kafouri neighborhood was "under strong security". The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to inform the media.

General Abdel-Fattah Burhan said Hamdok had been held for his safety and would likely be released, however warning that other members of the government could be tried.

The day after the military seized power, pro-democracy protesters blocked the streets of the capital Khartoum with makeshift barricades and burning tires. According to doctors, the troops fired on the crowd, killing four protesters.

The takeover came after weeks of mounting tensions between military and civilian leaders over the course and pace of Sudan's transition to democracy.

The United Nations Security Council met urgently to discuss the situation in Sudan, a nation in Africa linked by language and culture to the Arab world after the military coup.
