• The Strasbourg Christmas market will open its doors on November 26 and that for 31 days.

  • On the program, the return of the chalets, priority to traditions, authenticity and solidarity with a concept that will continue to evolve during the coming years of the mandate of the new municipality.

  • The chalets will be more spaced out and distributed over new squares in the city in order to promote the fluidity of passages for Strasbourg residents and visitors, but also to highlight the architectural heritage of the city.

“You might as well say it right away, we will not answer any security and health questions. They will be the subject of a subsequent press conference with the prefecture. "It is with these words that the mayor of Strasbourg Jeanne Barseghian immediately swept away the many questions that were burning on the lips of journalists invited this Tuesday to a press conference on Operation Strasbourg Capital of Christmas. Even if we already know, by a letter sent to the inhabitants, that on-street parking will be prohibited in the Big Island, and traffic very limited under more or less the same conditions as in previous editions. However, the trams will serve all the stations, except the one at Place Broglie. But the questions, especially checkpoints and a possible health pass, therefore remain unresolved.

The municipal team, on the other hand, expanded on the programming, the presentation, and the values it wishes to defend.

This 2021 edition, entitled "Allumons les étoiles", like the path of stars which will illuminate the promenade of Strasbourg residents and visitors throughout the city to the Sainte-Madeleine bridge.

An edition that aims to be "unique, magical, united and authentic", without falling into "over-tourism" while improving in quality.

“The idea is not to welcome fewer visitors, defended the mayor, but to win qualitatively.

To allow Strasbourg residents to reclaim the Christmas market, they who, more and more, ended up sulking it ”, assures Jeanne Barseghian

A reappropriation of the market

New ambition, new challenges. The municipality intends to reaffirm strong values such as "those of authenticity, modernity and solidarity" which will be the common thread of this edition. While taking care to preserve its economic potential, which represents more than 250 million euros in economic benefits. For this, residents of Strasbourg and visitors will be invited from November 26 to take part in the inauguration by "constituting a choir" which will perform on different sites before the lighting of the big tree and a stroll, also participatory. On the other hand, finished the big stage with a star artist. Place Kléber will host a sharing village, enhanced, with nearly 90 associations which will also organize round tables and conferences from December 16 to 19 in the Aubette Ballroom. The public will also be invited to participate in solidarity collections or to share a soup concocted by four starred chefs on December 24 at 5 p.m. at the foot of the tree.

A large Christmas tree that will be adorned this year with raw wood shapes, contemporary silhouettes reminiscent of mussels in Bredele and the cathedral, as well as red and white balls reminiscent of the apples used to decorate Christmas trees.

An evolving concept

New decorations, new illuminations also with more than 33 kilometers of electric garlands which will embellish the 14 places of the city welcoming nearly 320 chalets this year. Almost as much as in 2019. But above all, a new arrangement of the Christmas markets, with wider aisles to facilitate the passage of visitors. Markets spread over all the squares of the Big Island, including four new ones. The idea is also to showcase their heritage. Like Place Broglie, where the new distribution of chalets will allow video mapping on the facade of the town hall. A first which will explain the Christkindelsmärik through accounts in pictures. Once again reinvested, the Place du Château will host chalets in the parvis of the cathedral. The off market will be set up again on Place Grimmeissen. Another stronghold, the redesigned Louise-Weiss square will host the Advent village, with creative workshops as well as dance and theater shows.

Another great innovation is that the guest country, Germany, will not have a chalet on Place Gutenberg.

This will be occupied by a health and safety PC.

On the other hand, the German artists will offer exhibitions, on the world of tales and shows, concerts, in various places of the city.

An evolution of the Christmas market which will continue and strengthen throughout the mandate of the new municipality which also intends to "set up a citizen consultation to involve the population in the development project of this event" which remains essential.
