During the past two days, a picture of the former Afghan army commander, General Hebatullah Ali Zai, sitting on a sidewalk in the United States, has spread on social media around the world, and in Afghanistan in particular.

The image of a high-ranking military commander in a refugee camp in Virginia has sparked fierce debate among Afghans, especially since he was appointed one week before the Taliban took control of the capital, Kabul.

Zai's photo, which was reported by many Afghan newspapers, was taken at a moment when he looked down, looking at the ground, defeated and tired, on the sidewalk of one of the refugee camps.
