• On March 17, a young man of Chechen origin was shot in the head in the Cleunay district of Rennes.

  • A man suspected of being the gunman's accomplice was arrested and indicted during the summer.

  • Investigators have also established a link between the murder of Hamzat Labazanov and a shooting four days earlier in the town of Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande.

It has now been more than seven months since Hamzat Labazanov was shot dead in the Cleunay district of Rennes.

The shooting had broken out at the very beginning of the afternoon, on March 17, in front of the Carrefour City shopping center, a place known to be an important point of deal in the Breton capital.

Hit in the head, the man of Chechen origin died the next day at the Pontchaillou University Hospital.

Also targeted by the shots, his brother was also injured.

Aged 21, a man suspected of being the author of the shootings was arrested by the police near the scene of the shooting the same day and charged with murder in an organized gang and attempted murder in an organized gang.

A week later, a man presented as the accomplice of the alleged shooter was arrested and indicted.

A second arrest

Since then, the investigation has seen new twists and turns.

A new alleged accomplice of the shooter was thus arrested on June 8, we learned from the Rennes public prosecutor, confirming information from Ouest-France.

Already convicted in narcotics cases, the young man, born in 1999, was "identified thanks to biological traces left on a clothing effect linked to the murder of the young man", specifies Philippe Astruc.

He was indicted for complicity in intentional homicide, attempted intentional homicide and criminal association.

Another shooting four days earlier

As a result of these new elements, the first alleged accomplice is no longer indicted in this case. The examining magistrate placed him at the beginning of October "under the status of assisted witness", underlines the public prosecutor. But he remains in pre-trial detention and indicted for another part of the case. Because investigators have since established a link between the murder of Hamzat Labazanov and violent events that occurred four days before the shooting in Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande, a town south of Rennes.

On March 13, a young man known for drug trafficking was injured by gunfire in the leg.

The facts took place on rue André-Malraux, just next to the town hall.

It is near this point of deal known to the police services that a father was beaten to death on July 21 by a gang of several individuals.

After this shooting, the victim refused to file a complaint and be examined by a forensic doctor.

On the same day, one of his close friends was also attacked in the same commune.

"Two people were implicated for these two acts and the investigation was entrusted to the judicial police of Rennes", indicates Philippe Astruc.

The main suspect "confirms having shot the Labazanov brothers"

Investigators suspect these two individuals of being Cleunay's gunman and the one who was initially presented as his accomplice.

Questioned by an examining magistrate on this second part of the case, the first "contested his participation" in the events of March 13.

On the other hand, he "confirmed having fired on the Labazanov brothers on March 17 but denies having had an intention of homicide", specifies the prosecutor.

The second has meanwhile "disputed his participation in the murder and did not wish to explain" the events of March 13.

They were both indicted for attempted murder in an organized gang, possession of a weapon, participation in a criminal association with a view to preparing a crime, willful violence with ITT not exceeding eight days in a meeting. , with weapon and premeditation.
