October 25, 2021 The Beijing marathon has been postponed indefinitely "in order to prevent the risk of transmission of the coronavirus epidemic" and "to effectively protect the health and safety of runners, staff and residents": the organizers said in a note. Around 30,000 runners were expected to take part in the event on October 31st.

The Wuhan marathon, which was supposed to have 26,000 participants in the city, was also canceled at the last minute for the same reasons. On Wednesday, Beijing will mark the 100 days leading up to the Winter Olympics, which will begin on February 4th. Organizers admitted earlier this month that they are "facing great pressure" from Covid-19.

Chinese authorities are working to contain the contagion by carrying out massive tests on residents and deciding targeted closures.

Yesterday the suspension of organized inter-provincial trips was announced in five regions where cases have been detected, including that of Beijing.

Some cities have also suspended bus and taxi services.
