25 October 2021 New record of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere last year, with an annual rate of increase above the average for the period between 2011 and 2020, and this trend continued into 2021.

This was stated by the World Meteorological Organization (WTO ), United Nations agency, in the annual bulletin on greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) that trap heat.

The increase in concentrations of greenhouse gases jeopardizes the temperature targets of the Paris climate agreement, warns the general secretary of the OM, Petteri Taalas, warning: "We are really off track".

The OMM report, which is based on its Global Atmosphere Watch network's monitoring of "atmospheric abundances" (what remains in the atmosphere after the oceans and biosphere absorb greenhouse gases), explains that "as long as emissions will continue, the global temperature will continue to rise ".

Given the "long life" of Co2, the temperature level already observed will persist for several decades even if the emissions will rapidly reduce to net zero, the Omm continues explaining that "in addition to the increase in temperatures, this means more extreme weather conditions. including intense heat and precipitation, melting ice, rising tide levels, and ocean acidification,    accompanied by far-reaching socio-economic impacts ".

The Bulletin shows that from 1990 to 2020, "the radiation forcing - the warming effect on our climate - of long-lived greenhouse gases increased by 47%, with Co2 accounting for about 80% of this increase."
