It took only four hours Friday for the jurors of the Assize Court of Montauban to sentence Florian Varin, barely 30 years old, to 28 years of criminal imprisonment, including 18 years of security, and 10 years of socio-judicial monitoring.

This was the third trial for this man arrested in Toulouse in 2012, after raping a student and leaving her for dead in a garbage container.

Before being confused by Toulouse investigators, the man, addicted to pornography and raised in a difficult family context, had committed five other rapes, in Rennes, Niort and La Rochelle.

Florian Varin had already been sentenced twice to 30 years of criminal imprisonment, in Toulouse, then on appeal by the Tarn Assize Court.

But these lawyers had succeeded in having this last conviction annulled for a procedural flaw.

This time, his victims will no longer have to meet him in the courtroom.
