"Expo 2020 Dubai" announced, yesterday, the launch of the "Al Wasl Opera" shows, from 16 to 19 December.

Al Wasl Opera is the fruit of cooperation with the National Opera of Wales.

It is a prominent cultural achievement for the international event, which celebrates the millennia-old history of the UAE, its achievements and ambitions.

The show will present more than 100 artists and musicians, in addition to a production team of 70 music professionals, to bring together the best international operatic talents, in celebration of Expo 2020's main slogan, "Connecting Minds, Creating the Future."

The musical “Al Wasl Opera” was composed by Muhammad Fairouz, co-written and composed by Maha Gargash, directed by Sir David Bounty, and directed by Justin Brown.

Al-Wasl is the old name for the Emirate of Dubai, a name that expresses international cooperation here. Al-Wasl Opera shows the importance of joint action to achieve sustainability, one of the three sub-themes of the Expo.

Najeeb Mohammed Al-Ali, Executive Director - Office of the Commissioner-General of Expo 2020 Dubai, said that Expo 2020 Dubai presents a distinguished opera that supports the flourishing artistic scene in the UAE and embodies our country's values of tolerance and cooperation, as well as our global sense of responsibility towards each other and our planet.”

The opera composer, Muhammad Fairouz, stressed that “Al Wasl Opera” brings together personalities from various artistic backgrounds to formulate a single art form, and there is nothing more universal than opera and theater.

If people can laugh and cry together, anything between them is possible.

Sir David Bountney, director of Al Wasl Opera, explained, "The story of Al Wasl begins in the desert, and we have devised a rather unique way to metaphorically represent this desert."

He added: “In the middle chapter we are in the present, where we make strong reference to the construction of the Burj Khalifa, and we move to the future in the final chapter, where we become in a purely imaginary world, exploring what the future may or may not be, which will be determined by whether we make a commitment towards a sustainable future.

Al Wasl Opera will be sung in English, and the show will last for 90 minutes, including only one intermission.

Tickets are available for sale directly from Dubai Opera, as it hosts shows on its main theater, which can accommodate more than 2,000 people.
