Imagine that we are the protagonists of a science-fiction film, or rather, apocalyptic: after months locked up at home after a severe confinement by a global pandemic, when we go outside again we find

a space invaded by nature

, as if suddenly we would have traveled in time and appeared in Prehistory.

Would we know how to function in that wild natural environment?

Could we subsist on what we find out there?

...

Nor is it necessary to move to the field of fiction; In reality, all of us who practice outdoor sports can find ourselves in

difficult situations

. Just a couple of examples: you have gone out to do a summit in winter, but you have not calculated the time of the march well and it gets dark on the mountain, you get disoriented and cannot find your way back, and also your mobile phone is It has been without battery due to the cold and you cannot call for rescue, the temperatures begin to drop ... What is the first thing you would do? Another situation: a fellow traveler falls into

a frozen lake and you need to make a fire

quickly to warm him up. You know how to do it? The answer, I'm afraid, is a

resounding

no

.

One of the people who could survive in a legal setting or in hostile situations and environments in nature is Maykol García, a naturalist and expert in survival and subsistence techniques in the natural environment. And to learn how to answer these questions, we signed up for one of the

survival courses

taught in

Manzanares el Real

, at the foot of the impressive geological mass of La Pedriza, on the southern slope of the Sierra de Guadarrama.

His passion for adventure led him to

live for three years with the indigenous tribes of the Alto Orinoco

, in Venezuela, which made him reflect on what these people needed to survive in nature: fire, water, shelter and food, the "four pillars' of survival.

"By ensuring these elements it is possible to survive and all that is added is comfort, that is also the philosophy that I transmit in my courses."

A one day experience

In today's life we have lost the ability to procure those basic elements. Therefore, in this one-day experience Maykol will teach us how to cover them. The order in which they are applied will depend on the situation and our priorities. And then, in the first case, how would we act? Maykol responds: “

One of the main causes of death in the natural environment is hypothermia

. In this case, when faced with a freezing night without a shelter, a lot of heat is lost. If I have a cave or large rocks to protect myself from the wind and cold, I will not have to seek shelter, but if not, my priority will be to find or make one: protect ourselves with a survival blanket that we carry in our kit or with any element of our own clothes or

improvise a shelter with branches

.

Isolating ourselves from the hostility of the climate gives us a sense of security that allows us to think about the other pillars that we need.

In the course, several practical workshops are carried out on each of the elements: that of

fire

, in which we will learn to generate it with different methods to verify that it is not so easy to make a fire by rubbing two sticks as we see in the movies.

He

will

also

teach us to find water, to purify it, to transport it and to conserve it

(we warn you: there are no taps on the farm where the course takes place);

to

look for vegetable and animal food

(we cannot

spoil you

, but there is a surprise in this workshop);

and finally, to build a shelter.

At the end of the day, in addition to taking home these basic notions in survival techniques, we will also gain

greater security and confidence in ourselves

, and the psychology of survival is also essential: having knowledge and a strong mind will help us between other things not to panic at problems.

And the feeling of knowing how to function in an environment that at the beginning of the day seemed hostile and unknown to us is very gratifying.

They will see.
