The lava flows from Cumbre Vieja, the volcano on the island of La Palma in the Canaries (Spain) which has erupted since mid-September, have trapped several dogs in their enclosure.

But the animals have since appeared to have been rescued by strangers, reports

A rescue operation was scheduled to rescue the dogs on Wednesday.

But thanks to drones, the authorities realized that the canines were no longer in their enclosure.

Instead, the anonymous rescuers simply left a sign saying "the dogs are fine."

A team of drone operators were planning to rescue dogs trapped by a volcano.

As they were prepping to launch, they realized the dogs weren't there - and had been already saved by anonymous rescuers.

... Several people have shared videos and photos of the famous sign on social networks, but the perpetrators of the rescue have still not been identified.

On the island of La Palma, the CEO of the drone company in charge of the rescue operation confirmed the presence of footprints in the enclosure.

Now the company will be using thermal imaging cameras to try to track down these dogs, if they are still around.

For several days, the weakened and hungry dogs, blocked by the lava flows, were also fed thanks to the drones bringing them something to eat.

Local media have since claimed the dogs have been reunited with their owners.

"The dogs are who they should be with," said a source close to the matter.
