Syria executes 24 people convicted of setting forest fires

The Syrian Ministry of Justice said today, Thursday, that the death sentence was carried out yesterday, Wednesday, against 24 people, after they were convicted of setting fires that destroyed large areas of forests, most of them in the coastal province of Latakia.

The ministry said on its Facebook page, "Twenty-four criminals were executed yesterday for committing terrorist acts that led to death and damage to state infrastructure and public and private properties by using incendiary materials.

The death sentence was carried out after the verdict was ratified by the Court of Cassation and the opinion of the Amnesty Committee was issued that the sentence should be executed.”

She added that 11 others were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Authorities arrested dozens at the end of last year and said they had confessed to starting fires that began in September 2020 and continued until mid-October last year.

The Ministry of Justice said in the statement, “The Ministry of Interior was able late last year to reach the perpetrators and those involved in the outbreak of dozens of fires in Lattakia, Tartous and Homs. .

She added, "The total number of fires that affected the governorates of Lattakia, Tartous, Homs and Hama last year reached 187, affecting 280 villages and towns."

State television showed what it said were confessions from some of the perpetrators, who said they had received money in exchange for setting the fires.
