Several authorities and companies participated in the exercise.

Among others, police, SOS Alarm and the rescue service.

The scenario was that a train had collided with something on Tjustbanan, and instead of sending out rescue services on the track, they sent up a drone to search.

- The idea is to start traffic as quickly as possible after an accident.

In this way, we can reduce the time when traffic is at a standstill by at least 25 percent, says Peter Melander at Vinova, who is one of the parties in the project.

Reverse order

The area at and around the airport in Västervik, where Sweden's first UAS zone is located, is becoming a center for test activities for drones.

And having a free air space available is important to be able to develop drones.

- Geographical UAS zones normally mean that drones are shut out.

Here they have turned it around.

This means that we get a protected zone where we can develop those systems, says Urban Wahlberg at Drone Center Sweden in Västervik.

Successful exercise

Wednesday's exercise turned out well.

And both the police and the rescue service believe in drones as a good tool in, for example, rescue operations.

- For us, it is an extremely good tool when we, for example, want to search a larger area, says Håkan Hermansson at the police.

- We can quickly scout a larger area and find the reason why we went out on alarm.

Regardless of whether it is a fire, traffic accident or something out in the woods where it is difficult to get there, we can quickly find roads there and locate it, says Roger Landelius at the rescue service in Västervik.
