The judicial investigator in the Beirut port explosion case, Judge Tariq Al-Bitar, has scheduled the 28th session of this month to interrogate former Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab.

Al-Bitar also set two sessions on the 29th of this month to question the former Ministers of Interior and Public Works, Nohad Al-Mashnouq and Ghazi Zuaiter.

On July 2, Al-Bitar accused 10 officials and officers, including two representatives from the Amal Movement, Ali Hassan Khalil and Ghazi Zuaiter, and former Prime Minister Hassan Diab.

Last Tuesday, Al-Bitar suspended his investigations after being informed of a lawsuit filed by the two former ministers to assign another judge.

Political forces, including Hezbollah, rejected Al-Bitar's allegations, as its Secretary-General, Hassan Nasrallah, considered that the investigator's work was political targeting and had nothing to do with justice.

Observers fear that political pressures will lead to the dismissal of Al-Bitar, as happened with his predecessor Fadi Sawan, who was removed last February after his claim against Diab and 3 former ministers.

Last Thursday, Beirut lived a bloody day after 7 people were killed and dozens were wounded by heavy gunfire during a demonstration organized by supporters of Hezbollah and the Amal movement, to denounce Al-Bitar's decisions and demand his removal.

On August 4, 2020, a massive explosion occurred in the port of Beirut, killing 217 people and wounding about 7,000 others, as well as massive material damage to residential and commercial buildings, due to the presence of about 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, which was confiscated from a ship and stored since a year ago. 2014.
