Today, Tuesday, the Syrian Constitutional Committee will continue discussions of the basic principles of the new constitution in the continuous meetings of the sixth round in the Swiss city of Geneva.

The delegations of the regime and the opposition and representatives of civil society arrived at the UN headquarters in Geneva, in order to conduct two working sessions of the small group charged with drafting the constitution, consisting of 45 members equally.

Yesterday was devoted to discussing the first item put forward by the regime related to the sovereignty, unity and independence of Syria, while the committee is expected to discuss today and during the rest of the tour other constitutional principles, including the official name of the republic, the approved flag, the official language of the state and the national anthem.

According to the Anatolia Agency correspondent, Tuesday's meetings will be held in the form of two working sessions in which a constitutional principle submitted by the opposition, including the army, armed forces and intelligence, will be discussed.


The opposition will also present - according to the same source - during the session a court constitutional drafting for discussion by the parties forming the Constitutional Committee, provided that later constitutional principles will be presented tomorrow, Wednesday, by representatives of civil society organizations.

The sessions will be held at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva, under the supervision of the UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen, and the work of the round is expected to end next Friday.

A member of the Constitutional Committee on behalf of the opposition, Tariq al-Kurdi, told Anadolu Agency that the committee had embarked on its real mission, as it was discussing formulations of constitutional principles submitted by the three parties to reach common ground between them.

And yesterday, Monday, the co-chair of the Constitutional Committee for the opposition, Hadi Al-Bahra, announced that the committee held the first session of the sixth round of its work in Geneva to discuss the basic principles, as part of the process of drafting constitutional reform.

The meetings of the sixth round come after 9 months of suspension and 5 rounds that did not achieve progress, as part of a more comprehensive process sponsored by the United Nations, in the hope of ending the Syrian conflict that has been going on for more than 10 years.

And participate in the current meetings of the committee 45 members who make up the members of the small group to draft the new constitution, divided equally between the regime, the opposition and civil society, and under the supervision of the UN envoy.

The small group was commissioned by the expanded constitutional committee to draft the constitution, and the latter was established in 2019, and consists of 150 members equally between the regime, the opposition and civil society.

The United States renewed its support for the Commission's negotiations to advance the political process as set out in Security Council Resolution 2254.
