Former US President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against a House committee investigating an attack by his supporters on the Capitol on January 6, demanding that presidential records not be disclosed.

Trump asserted in the lawsuit he filed on Monday in the U.S. District Court in Washington that the materials sought by the House of Representatives investigation into the storming of the US Congress are protected under a legal principle called executive benefits that guarantees the confidentiality of some conversations in the White House.

Trump insists on executive privilege, which is the right of a president to withhold certain information from Congress or the courts.

"The commission's requests are unprecedented in their scale and scope and have no legitimate legislative purpose," Trump attorney Jesse Pinol said in the lawsuit.

"Trump wants to delay and obstruct the investigation," committee member Liz Cheney, a Republican from Wyoming, and Democrat Penny Thompson, from Mississippi, said in a statement.

"It is hard to imagine what is more important to people than seeking answers about an attack on our democracy and an attempt to nullify an election result," they added.

A White House statement said there was no basis for Steve Bannon to avoid testimony, and Trump's invocation of "presidential privilege" was unjustified.

The statement added that incumbent President Joe Biden will not stop the transfer of documents from the National Archives to a congressional committee.

Hundreds of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6 in an attempt to block lawmakers' declaration of Joe Biden's victory in the presidential election.

More than 600 people face criminal charges because of their role in the raid.

Trump is accused of inciting his supporters to storm the Capitol.

The riots followed his unsubstantiated allegations of voter fraud in the presidential election he lost to Biden.

The committee in the US House of Representatives - which is dominated by Democrats - is investigating the circumstances of the attack on the Capitol Building.
