History repeats itself, only in a different guise.

The cynical haggling of the rulers in Moscow and Minsk with migrants shows once again the dependence of Germany and the EU on external powers as well as the fragility of rules.

Berlin and Brussels must insist that people in need are treated humanely everywhere, that their right to protection is examined, that they have access to essentials as well as legal assistance.

As the preferred country of many migrants, Germany in particular needs to insist that it maintains its state authority. If “2015” is not to repeat itself, which is no longer a German reason of state, but has become a new mantra for Merkel, then that means: protection of borders, control of travelers, cooperation with neighbors.

Today, as then, it is not about closing the border completely, but about sending a strong signal: We are enforcing the law.

Ultimately, this is in everyone's interest, which is not unimportant for German politics, which ultimately reluctantly talk about its own national interests.

But they also have to be enforced.

Also towards Russia and Belarus.

Temporary border controls do not replace negotiations and agreements.

But they make it clear who is in charge.

There must not be another loss of control.
