October 18, 2021Thanks to Science, "we are off again". This was stated by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella speaking at the inauguration of the academic year of the University of Pisa.

"This academic year is a new beginning, for the conditions we have gone through and for what reopening academic activity represents. Life often puts us in front of new beginnings, we are always called to new beginnings", underlined the Head of State. reiterating that "we need great confidence in the future, a great opening".

There is an "anti-scientific drift that is recorded almost everywhere, even in our country, albeit in small doses", "which leads to blocking the future and bringing everything back to the past. We owe a lot to science. We have spent a period long, which we must not forget, also out of respect for the dead. All this is behind us because science has handed us the vaccines, because the distance measures and the masks have defeated, or at least we hope to have done so, the contagion ", he President Mattarella said again.

"We have the unrepeatable opportunity to renew the country, we cannot lose it, we would damage the new generations", he continued, "for this it is painful that right now, when we see an encouraging recovery, in which the country is recovering, aggressive phenomena are exploding protest almost wanting to intercept the recovery of the country that must be carried out successfully ". "These are behaviors that create sadness, not much alarm because they break with the civic sense of most of our fellow citizens, this is the strength of our country", he added.

We are off again, the economic condition of the country is in a growth that exceeds hopes, at the highest average compared to Europe. We have encouraging prospects, the country is breathing and living again, we owe this to science and the sense of responsibility of our fellow citizens ", continued the head of state.

President Mattarella's participation in the inauguration of the new academic year reaches ten years exactly from that of Giorgio Napolitano, who attended the opening ceremony of the academic year 2011-2012.

At that time it was the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, this time, however, the 75th anniversary of the "institutional referendum" which sanctioned the birth of Republic and the first settlement of the Constituent Assembly.
