On Monday, about 40 participants from politics, business and universities went on a tour of Västra Hamnen in Malmö, where the first station of the Öresund Metro can end up.

The idea is that the tunnel will go through the limestone mountain below the Sound and Saltholmen to end up in Copenhagen's metro network.

- We have a Fehrman Belt tunnel that will be completed in 2029. Then there will be increased pressure on the Öresund Bridge to increase the number of freight trains and then you need a parallel connection that can take care of passenger traffic between Malmö and Copenhagen, says Klas Nydahl, former city planner in Malmö.

Can become a reality in 2035

If the Öresund Metro becomes a reality, the plans are for it to be completed in 2035. Then it is likely that the first station will be in Västra Hamnen in Malmö and then continue to Malmö Central.

- This is something that I know must become a reality for us to utilize the full potential that we have in this region.

It would be catastrophic for Malmö, the region and our country if Öresund were to become a bottleneck in the future, says Roko Kursar (L), second vice chairman of the Municipal Executive Board.
