The Italians are expected to vote on Sunday 17 and Monday 18 October to elect the mayors of the cities in a ballot after the first round of October 3 and 4.

Right-left duels are eagerly awaited, especially in Rome and Turin, where the 5-Star Movement had reigned until then.

But the ballot is an opportunity to measure the state of the forces supporting the government of Mario Draghi.

With our correspondent in Rome,

Anne Treca

Five years ago, the 5 Star Movement (M5E)

settled in the cities of Rome

and Turin.

There was then talk of a

new era in Italian politics

, signifying the end of an old order.

But Beppe Grillo and his troops lost control.

For the management of their daily life, the Italians have chosen to rely on the traditional parties: according to the results of the first round, most voters seem to want to leave the M5E and perhaps favor the left.

Because if the candidates of the coalition of the right made disappointing scores, we will not know until Monday, October 18 in the evening if this trend is confirmed.

Through their results,

the future of the balance of power

between the

leader of the far right Matteo Salvini

, who supports the Draghi government, and Giorgia Meloni, who, at the head of the traditional right-wing party, Brothers of Italy

, will also be measured through their results.

, is in opposition.

The Democratic Party wants the "grand slam"

Opposite, the Democratic Party (PD, center-left) hopes to win all the major Italian cities.

After victories acquired a fortnight ago in Bologna, Naples and Milan, he still has to regain Turin and Rome.

It would then be the “grand slam”, after years of electoral punishments.

Such a brilliant coup from the PD would strengthen the Draghi government, of which the center-left is the strongest pillar.
