The preliminary hearing behind closed doors of the maxi trial for the collapse of the Morandi Bridge, in which 43 people lost their lives on 14 August 2018

, kicks

off this morning in the tensile structure set up in the atrium of the palace of justice in Genoa.

The judge will have to decide who to send for trial among the 59 defendants, including the former CEO of Aspi and Atlantia, Giovanni Castellucci.

The defense lawyers of Castellucci himself and of 5 other defendants announced in recent days their intention to present a petition for recusal of the gup Paolo Faggioni at the opening of the hearing. According to the lawyers of the 6 defendants, the judge should be replaced because he had signed the order of precautionary measures against the former CEO of Aspi and other suspects in the context of the parallel investigation on noise barriers not in accordance with the law.

“It is important to be there.

The committee has every right to be there.

We hope not to witness the scenes we saw during the probationary incident with certain contemptuous attitudes on the part of certain defenses ". This was stated by Egle Possetti, spokesman for the Committee of the relatives of the victims of the Morandi Bridge, before entering the courtroom for the start of the preliminary hearing on the collapse of the motorway viaduct.
