  • Q&A Last minute electrical grinding to save a waning 'ax'

The rise in prices in the electricity market is a headache for the Spanish and, therefore, also for the Government. The fact that the electricity bill has skyrocketed is compounded by international competition for the purchase of gas or the conflict between Morocco and Algeria. Fearing that Spain may suffer a shortage of it, Pedro Sánchez has guaranteed that the country will have enough supply to face winter, a time when demand is skyrocketing.

"The supply is guaranteed," said the chief executive in an interview in La Sexta. The geopolitical conflict between

Morocco

and

Algeria

is a problem for

Spain

, because one of the gas pipelines that part of the latter country reaches through the Moroccan, and the breakdown of relations disables that route. There remains a gas pipeline that reaches Spain directly from Algeria. The Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, recently traveled to Algeria to discuss this matter.

To this problem must be added international competition, with the role that China is playing, which has triggered its purchase of gas, disrupting the market.

In fact, so far this year, Spain has received 19 ships less loaded with Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) than in the same period in 2020.

Despite the volatility of the market, Sánchez wanted to send a message of calm, pointing out that the commitment with Algeria is that the demand from Spain be covered.

Of course, he has insisted that his bet, as happened with vaccines, is that Europe carry out a centralized purchase of gas, to obtain a better price and to guarantee supply to all countries.

The proposals that Spain is making in Brussels, however, are not being addressed at the moment.

The chief executive, despite the escalation of the electricity bill, has reiterated his commitment that Spaniards at the end of the year pay on average the same as they disbursed in 2018, discounting the

CPI

. To do this, you have anticipated your intention to take further action if there is a deviation from that goal.

The Government, Sánchez, is determined to keep up with the electricity companies. Despite the fact that the vice president of

Ecological Transition

, Teresa Ribera, has been forced to announce a new clarification of the Royal Decree Law that establishes a cut to electricity companies to contain the strong increase in electricity and gas prices, the disagreement was maintains, further increased by the anger generated in the PSOE by the signing of former socialist councilor

Antonio Carmona

as vice president of Iberdrola.

"They will know," he said when questioned on La Sexta by Iberdrola and Carmona.

And he left a dart: "I am not the object of any pressure from any lobby, I owe myself to the citizens, the businessmen, the self-employed ... to a large majority that views with great concern what is happening with the energy market" , exposed in clear allusion to the complaints and the malaise in the sector by the measures promoted by the Government.

Pact with the PP

Sánchez addressed several issues, such as, of course, the pact reached with the PP to unblock institutions such as the Constitutional Court, the Court of Accounts or the Ombudsman.

The Judicial Power has been left out of this pact, but the Chief Executive has been optimistic about its unlocking.

"I would like to think that yes, we are closer."

The Prime Minister recognized the "effort" of the 'popular' to seal the pact, but accused them of making "an advantageous reading of legality. If the Constitution mandates to comply with the renewal [of

the General Council of the Judiciary

] I hope that we do it in the next few days, "said Sánchez in an interview in La Sexta. As this newspaper has been reporting, the chief executive found that the Government ruled out changing the system for electing members of the Judiciary and asked the PP to renounce that requirement. "It does not have a parliamentary majority to achieve it."

Among the issues addressed was the situation of Don Juan Carlos and the fact that the Prosecutor's Office may close the investigations into his businesses soon.

Sánchez described everything that has been published in the media as "disturbing information" and indicated that he is in favor of the

Emeritus

giving explanations on the issues for which he has been investigated.

"In my opinion, it would be convenient for him to give his opinion on all these facts."
