October 14, 2021 The World Health Organization has unveiled a new team of scientists with whom it intends to relaunch the stalled investigation into the origins of Covid-19: a senior WHO official said it could be last chance to know the truth. The group of 26 experts will be tasked with producing a new global picture on the origins of viruses with epidemic and pandemic potential, including Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. Michael Ryan, WHO director of emergencies, said it could be "the last chance to understand the origins of this virus".

Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO technical manager on Covid-19, said the new group of experts will urgently assess what is known, what still remains unknown and what needs to be done quickly.

"I anticipate that ... he will recommend further studies in China and potentially elsewhere," he said.

"There is no time to waste on this."
