Parents of newborns will receive “baby boxes” at the maternity ward from February 2022, the Secretary of State for Children said on Tuesday.

This will allow healthcare staff to convey prevention messages.

“Each object conveys and symbolizes a message intended to help parents,” declared the cabinet of Secretary of State Adrien Taquet.

“It will serve as a support for dialogue with families at the maternity hospital.

"

Don't forget yourself as a parent

The box will contain a sleeping bag, in order to explain to parents how to put the baby to bed to avoid any accident.

An album will make parents aware of the importance of the artistic and cultural awakening of the baby and will encourage them to read to their child.

A soap will promote natural products and alert on endocrine disruptors and chemicals.

Finally, a moisturizer for the mother will also be part of the box, since she too, like the baby, must be the center of attention and care after birth.

The items will be presented in a shoulder bag, as an "invitation to go out, not to be forgotten as a parent, to go to play sports or activities outside," the government said.

Focus on "the first 1,000 days"

180,000 boxes will be distributed from February in maternity wards in municipalities with priority neighborhoods and rural revitalization municipalities.

The device will be evaluated in the summer before being extended to the whole of the territory.

This “baby box” is part of an initiative to make parents aware of the importance of the child's 1,000 days (from the start of pregnancy to the age of two).

A dedicated app and website have been launched.

In September 2020, psychiatrist Boris Cyrulnik submitted a report on the child's first 1,000 days at the request of the government.

From the end of October, future parents will receive a booklet by post giving them guidelines on sleep, screens, breastfeeding, diet, post-partum depression and violence prevention.
