According to EU Commissioner Maros Sefcovic, the Commission has had to turn inside out to arrive at the proposal that was presented on Wednesday, says Anna-Maja Persson, SVT's correspondent in London.

- He said that it was a robust package that provides improved opportunities.

What is now proposed is, for example, control exemptions for many plants, frozen goods and special British sausages and other goods of a "national nature", and that the paperwork at customs is halved.

"Want to preserve peace in Northern Ireland"

At the same time, the United Kingdom is required to guarantee that the goods then remain in Northern Ireland, and are not passed on to EU Member State Ireland.

- The purpose of all these parts is to preserve peace in Northern Ireland.

That is the most important thing, Maros Sefcovic said very clearly.

And to avoid a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland, says Anna-Maja Persson.

However, she does not consider the risk of trade war to be eliminated.

- This is just the beginning and they are on a collision course, the EU and the UK.

Among other things, the United Kingdom wants an international arbitral tribunal to decide any disputes, which the EU refuses because the European Court of Justice has that role today.
