In recent years, Poland has been criticized by the European Commission for the functioning of the judiciary.
Among other things, the Commission demands that Poland stop the Judicial Disciplinary Board set up by its Supreme Court, as it considers it a threat to the independence of the judiciary.
Poland has also received criticism from several quarters after the Polish Constitutional Court ruled that certain parts of the EU Treaty are contrary to the Polish Constitution.
The decision is controversial because EU member states must comply with the EU Treaty.
