12 October 2021 An accusation without mincing words: the United States would be the main culprits of the tension on the Korean peninsula. This is what North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said in a speech broadcast live on TV.

"The United States is the main cause of the instability - said Kim - and despite Washington's denials and calls for dialogue, there is no basis for believing that they are not hostile".

In a speech given yesterday at an exhibition on defense development to celebrate the 76th anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party, he then asked to strengthen the country's military capabilities to counter what he called "hostile forces" against Pyongyang, specifying however that that the move is not aimed at a war against South Korea or the United States. "The US has often reported that they are not hostile to our country, but there has been no behavioral reason to believe they are not," the leader added, criticizing Seoul and Washington for their combined military exercises and weapons development. . "For our descendants we have to be strong. We have to be strong first," he added. The observations matured less than two weeks after the North Korean test of a new anti-aircraft missile, equal to the fourth launch in September alone. "The military threats our country is facing are different from those we saw 10, five or three years ago", Kim said in the KCNA report, adding that the tensions on the Korean peninsula will not be easily resolved "because of the states. United ".

He accused Seoul of being "hypocritical" and having "double standards" for continuing to enhance military capabilities, while apparently speaking of "peace, cooperation and prosperity": expressing "strong regret", Kim said the North would respond with " strong actions "if South Korea continues to" violate our rights to self-defense ". However, Kim also said that strengthening his military is not targeting South Korea, stating that the "horrible story" of a conflict between the same people should not be repeated "on this earth". "Our enemy is war itself, not a certain country or forces like South Korea and the United States, but our external efforts for peace do not in any way mean giving up our rights to self-defense ", concluded the supreme commander.

In 2017, North Korea tested missiles that can reach the continental United States and carried out its by far most powerful nuclear blast to date. Pyongyang claims it needs its arsenal to protect itself from a US invasion. The Biden government has repeatedly stated that it has no hostile intent towards the North, but Kim declared at the "Self Defense 2021" exhibition: "I am very curious to know if there are people or countries who believe in it".

Washington and Seoul are security allies.

Some 28,500 US troops are deployed to South Korea to defend it from its neighbor who invaded it in 1950. Joint military exercises were held last August, activities that have always infuriated North Korea, which condemns them as preparations for the 'invasion.

South Korea has stepped up its military capabilities, successfully testing its first submarine-launched ballistic missile in September and revealing it has a supersonic cruise missile.
