Late last week, there were reports of intense bombing by Tigray rebels, TPLF.

And now the next phase seems to have begun.

The attack must be coordinated and carried out on several fronts with the support of other armed groups from the neighboring region of Amhara.

TPLF's press release states that "hundreds of thousands" have gone on attacks supported by fighter jets, tanks and drone bombs.

The Ethiopian government has not yet confirmed the offensive.

Abuse reports

The fighting, which began in November last year, has hit the civilian population of Tigray hard.

Roads are blocked and relief shipments do not arrive.

According to the UN, 350,000 people live on the brink of starvation and another two million are at risk.

Several reports of pure massacres and abuses have marked the conflict in Tigray, something SVT Nyheter previously reported on.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who received the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, has come under increasing international pressure due to the humanitarian situation in Tigray.

The conflict also risks destabilizing the political situation in Ethiopia, which has long been plagued by unrest between ethnic groups.

Neighboring Eritrea has allied itself with the Ethiopian government and has taken part in the fighting in Tigray, and in the long run the conflict threatens the stability of the entire Horn of Africa.
