12 October 2021 "The work of the extraordinary # G20 on # Afghanistan is underway. Among the topics at the center of the Summit: urgent humanitarian support for the Afghan population; fight against terrorism; freedom of movement within the territory and open borders". This was announced by a tweet from the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Draghi at Palazzo Chigi is in video link with representatives of 19 other countries. UN Secretary General Guterres appealed to world powers to support the Afghan economy.

The confrontation should last until 15.30 but it is not excluded that it will continue beyond.

The EU announces one billion euros in aid

The European Commission announces the deployment of one billion euros in aid to the Afghan population. "We must do everything possible to avoid a serious humanitarian and socio-economic collapse in Afghanistan. We must do it quickly," stressed Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

China and Russia do not participate

China has announced that it will not be represented by President Xi but by the Foreign Minister; also absent the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, not even the foreign minister Serghei Lavrov will be able to take part, as he is traveling. Representing Moscow will be the Deputy Foreign Minister, Igor Morgulov.

The issues at the center of the debate

Leaders are not scheduled to discuss the issue of recognizing the Taliban regime, whose initial promises in terms of protecting human and especially women's rights have so far been tragically disavowed in practice.

At the center of the debate, as anticipated by Draghi himself on 29 September, there will be above all the humanitarian emergency, also in view of the arrival of the cold, and its consequences in terms of increased migratory flows, in addition to the fight against terrorism and to the issue of security and freedom of movement within the borders of the country and across the border.

After convening the virtual meeting which anticipates the summit of G20 leaders in attendance by about twenty days, Mario Draghi had a series of bilateral meetings with partners, the most recent in chronological order was Chancellor Angela Merkel, in which she was reaffirmed the centrality of the G20 and its potential to address the tragic situation in Afghanistan following the takeover of the Taliban on 15 August last.

The points that will be taken into consideration are therefore humanitarian support, with the aim of obtaining respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, in particular for women, who must have guaranteed access to fundamental prerogatives starting from education. .

On the issue of terrorism, the goal is to prevent Afghanistan from becoming, after 20 years of NATO military presence, a sanctuary for armed groups, and the commitment to contrast the production and trafficking of drugs, the main source of financing for terrorists.
