Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said that the return of his country's ambassador to France is conditional on full respect for the Algerian state, adding that this required respect includes forgetting that Algeria was a French colony.

He added, in his statements to Algerian television, that "Algeria is a state that exists with all its pillars, with its army and proud people, who only submit to God."

Last week, Algeria recalled its ambassador in Paris, after French President Emmanuel Macron was quoted by Le Monde newspaper as saying that the Algerian "political-military regime" had rewritten the history of the French colonization of Algeria on the basis of "France-hatred".

The next day, Algeria closed its airspace to French military aircraft, according to the French military.

On October 5, Macron expressed his hope for a "calm" and said, "I have great respect for the Algerian people and have really friendly relations with President Tebboune.
