  Recently, the Ministry of Emergency Management and relevant departments conducted a consultation and analysis on the natural disasters in the first three quarters.

In the first three quarters, China experienced frequent extreme weather and climate events. Natural disasters were mainly floods, hail, drought, typhoons, earthquakes, and geological disasters. Low temperature freezing and snow disasters, sandstorms, forest and grassland fires, and marine disasters also occurred to varying degrees.

A total of 94.94 million people were affected by various natural disasters, 792 people were dead and missing, 157,000 houses collapsed, and direct economic losses were 286.4 billion yuan (RMB, the same below).

  Compared with the average value of the same period in the past five years, the number of people affected by the disaster, the number of dead or missing due to the disaster, the number of collapsed houses, and the direct economic loss decreased by 31%, 14%, 16%, and 14%, respectively.

  In the first three quarters of China, there were many extreme heavy rainfall processes, and floods accounted for a high proportion of losses. The number of dead and missing persons, collapsed houses and direct economic losses caused by floods accounted for more than 70% of the total losses from various disasters in the first three quarters.

According to statistics, a total of 39 heavy rainfall processes occurred in the first three quarters, with 582 millimeters of precipitation across the country, which was 4% more than the same period in normal years.

Among them, more than 40% to 90% of western Northeast China, southern eastern North China, northwest Huanghuai and other places, Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, Henan, Chongqing, Sichuan, Jiangxi and other 27 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities), a total of 533 rivers have exceeded the warning flood.

The autumn flood situation is severe. The Han River has the largest autumn flood since 2011, the Danjiangkou Reservoir has the highest water level since its construction, and the Haihe River system has the first autumn flood in the upper reaches of Weihe in nearly 20 years.

  In the first three quarters, China's wind and hail disasters have a wide range of impacts, and extreme convective phenomena such as tornadoes are obviously more frequent.

In the first three quarters, a total of 1,235 counties (cities, districts) were affected by wind and hail disasters, which were the most widely affected type of disaster, causing 15.92 million disasters and direct economic losses of 21.99 billion yuan.
