The President of the Russian International Chess Federation, Arkady Dvorkovich, announced the selection of Emirati expert Mahdi Abdul Rahim, Chairman of the Rules Committee of the International Federation, Chairman of the Referees Committee of the Asian Chess Federation, and the international lecturer in the arbitration and international organization courses, as the head of the referees for the Individual World Chess Championship held in Dubai, from November 24 to 16 December 2021, as part of the "Expo Dubai 2020" activities held between the current Norwegian world champion, Magnus Carlson, and his Russian challenger, Jan Nepomniacci.

Abdul Rahim became the first Arab and Asian, and the first non-European referee, to preside over the referees of the Individual World Chess Championship, in a unique and unprecedented achievement for the UAE sport in general, and for chess in particular. Great, assigning an Emirati international referee to manage and succeed the strongest tournaments of the International Federation, to determine the identity of the world champion in chess.
