08 October 2021 There are more than 700 thousand victims of Covid in the United States. Only country in the world to have exceeded this number. Another striking number is that among the "indirect" consequences of the pandemic are the 140,000 children who found themselves without one of their parents. The data was collected by the influential Pediatrics journal during 15 of the 19 months of the pandemic. In the majority of cases, it reads, surviving parents or other family members are left to provide for these children, which researchers loosely refer to as "orphans." For a percentage of these unfortunate minors, however, federal authorities have had to resort to custody.

African American and Hispanic orphans

22 thousand children remained with their grandfather as a point of reference, others with a person who lived in the same house as the child.

Another fact highlighted by the study is that more than half of the "orphaned" children belonged to the African American or Hispanic community, despite making up about 40% of the American population.

In California, 67% of children who lost their "primary guardian" were Hispanic while in Mississippi 57% were African American.
